Bill Rogers
2027 Red McCombs Community Impact Award Winner

Bill Rogers was the British Open champion and PGA Player of the Year in 1981.  But the winner of six PGA Tour events says his “defining moment” as a pro was joining fellow players in a Bible study and asking Jesus Christ to become his Lord and Savior.  The long-time San Antonio resident is being honored as the 2027 Red McCombs Community Impact Award winner at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Breakfast of Champions to be held at 7 a.m., February 23 at the Security Service Event Center, 15000 West I-10.

Rogers turned professional in 1974 after representing the U.S. in the 1973 Walker Cup and earning All American honors at the University of Houston.  His most remarkable year on the PGA Tour was 1981 when he won the British Open at Royal St. George’s and captured three other Tour victories, including a playoff win over Ben Crenshaw at the Texas Open. Rogers left the PGA Tour in 1988 and moved to San Antonio to become director of golf at San Antonio Country Club for 11 years.

Since leaving the regular PGA Tour, Rogers has served as an assistant golf coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio and has played sporadically on the PGA Champions Tour.  His most notable accomplishment as a senior player was winning the team portion of the 2002 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf with former UH teammate Bruce Lietzke.  Since ending his playing career, Rogers has joined Links Players to bring golfers together at courses worldwide to explore the life of Jesus Christ through fellowship and programming.
